Its time to De-Stigmatize with the Facts about Mental Health Illness and Recovery


  Are mental health issues rare?  No, they affect everyone in one form or another.


 People with mental health issues cant lead a good life? Most people with mental health issues make their way through treatment and live good and fulfilling lives.


Mental health issues happen because of bad parenting or a personal weakness?  Genetics and other situations such as trauma or problems in their environment are areas of influence that lead to mental health issues. 


 Treatment for mental health isn’t effective? The type of issue that a person is experiencing as well as therapy and medication help an individual to have a successful outcome in treatment. 


 Everyday stressors cause mental health issues? Mental health issues are caused by a combination of genetic and social factors to name a few; but dop not deserve the stigma that is placed on them by society, which makes it worse.  Mental health issues are always hereditary? There are some mental health issues that have a genetic component, but the environment is also a factor.  


People with a mental illness are violent?  People with a mental health illness don’t commit violence more than anyone else, but are more likely to be victimized by society because of the stigma placed on them


.  If you start to develop symptoms of a mental health disorder, seek help. There are many organizations in the community with valuable resources such as the Mental Health Association, NAMI ( National Alliance of Mental Illness ) and DBSA ( Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance ). Most communities have a 211 help number that you can call for helpful guidance and information.



 We live in a time when the words impossible and insolvable are no longer part of the scientific community’s vocabulary. Each day we move closer to trials that will not just minimize the symptoms of disease and injury but eliminate them.  –Christopher Reeve
